Royal Nilambur

Our Heritage
Nilambur, Kerala has grown the world's finest teak for over 175 years. We source it, shape it with traditional joinery, and back every piece with a 10-year warranty โ because we know exactly what the wood is capable of.

The Material
In 1846, British colonial administrators planted the first organised teak forest in Nilambur, Malappuram district, Kerala. Today, that forest โ Conolly's Plot โ is a UNESCO-recognised heritage site and the oldest teak plantation in the world. The trees that surround it, growing untouched in the natural hillside forests, are what we call Nilambur Wild Teak.
The Kerala Forest Department auctions Nilambur teak on a rotation policy โ trees are felled at a minimum of 50โ60 years. The premium logs our craftsmen select at these auctions are typically 60 to 100+ years old. Compare that to the plantation teak used in most commercial furniture, harvested at just 25โ40 years for maximum yield. That difference in growth time produces wood that is measurably denser, with a tighter grain and significantly higher natural oil content.
Those natural oils are what make the wood extraordinary for Indian homes. They act as a built-in preservative โ repelling moisture, resisting insects, and preventing the swelling and cracking that ruins lesser timber in humid coastal or monsoon climates. No chemical treatment needed. The wood maintains its structural integrity and its appearance across decades, not years.
Every piece of Royal Nilambur furniture comes with documented sourcing โ government-certified timber from Kerala Forest Department-approved sources. You know exactly where your wood came from.
The Craft
The colonial-era teak furniture that still stands in Kerala homes โ antiques that are now 80, 100, 150 years old โ was built using joinery techniques that predate power tools. We use the same ones.
Mortise and tenon joints lock structural connections without screws. Dovetail joints hold drawer and cabinet corners under tension that only gets tighter with time. Drawbored peg construction uses wooden pins that permanently bind a joint โ the wood swells around the peg and never releases. These methods produce connections that are stronger than the timber itself.
There is no MDF in our furniture. No particle board, no veneer, no veneered plywood core. When you see teak on the surface of a Royal Nilambur piece, it is solid teak from the surface to the structure. Every joint, every panel, every leg.
Every piece is made to order. When you place an order, your furniture doesn't leave a warehouse โ it enters our workshop. This means it is cut, shaped, jointed, and finished specifically for you. It is why we do not sell on discounts, and it is why no two pieces are exactly identical.
Mortise & Tenon
The oldest structural joint in woodworking. No fasteners needed.
Dovetail
Interlocking geometry that gains strength under load.
Drawbored Peg
A wooden pin that permanently locks the joint as the wood moves.
The People
Our master craftsmen are third-generation woodworkers from Nilambur and the surrounding Malappuram district. Their grandfathers built the furniture of Kerala's plantation households. Their fathers maintained and restored it. They learned the same joinery, the same techniques for reading wood grain, the same instinct for where a joint needs to be slightly tighter or slightly eased.
This is not knowledge that transfers from a manual or a course. It comes from standing beside someone who has done it for 40 years, watching them feel the resistance in a plane, understanding why they reject a particular board. Our craftsmen have that โ and they are teaching it to the next generation working alongside them in the workshop today.
When you buy a Royal Nilambur piece, you are buying the accumulated knowledge of three generations of craftsmen who have spent their working lives understanding one wood and one tradition.
The Guarantee
Most furniture warranties are 1โ2 years. We offer 10 because the material and the construction method make anything less feel dishonest. Wild teak has a natural lifespan well beyond 200 years. The joinery we use was holding furniture together in the 1800s. Structural failure isn't something we think about โ because it isn't something that happens.
Our 10-year warranty covers structural integrity โ any failure of joinery, any cracking or splitting from manufacturing, any defect in the timber. It does not cover surface wear from use, damage from accidents, or changes in wood colour from sunlight exposure (which is natural and expected with teak, and considered beautiful).
If something goes wrong with the structure of your piece within 10 years, we repair or replace it. No questions about whether you assembled it wrong or placed it incorrectly โ our furniture doesn't require assembly instructions, because it arrives assembled.
10-year structural warranty on every piece
Covers joinery failure, structural cracking, and manufacturing defects. Transferable if you gift or pass on the piece. Full details on the warranty page.
The Process
You order
Your piece enters production โ it doesn't leave a shelf. We confirm your order and begin scheduling it into the workshop queue.
Workshop production
Our craftsmen select the timber for your specific piece, cut and joint it, and allow adequate time for the wood to settle before finishing. Rushing this step is how furniture fails.
Quality check
Every joint is tested under load. Every surface is inspected. Every piece passes before it is wrapped for delivery.
Free delivery across South India โ always. The rest of India โ let's talk.
Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana: free delivery on every order. Smaller pieces ship via our courier partner to your door. Larger furniture is delivered and installed by our own team at no charge. For all other states, we deliver via our truck routes when scheduling allows โ often free โ or at a preferential rate via our logistics partners. Reach us on WhatsApp before ordering and we'll sort it out for your location.
Most furniture is designed to be replaced. We design furniture to be inherited.
The furniture industry's business model depends on things breaking, going out of style, and being discarded. Ours depends on the opposite โ on pieces that are still in use in 50 years, passed to a child or a grandchild with a story attached.
This is also the most honest form of sustainability. A piece of furniture that lasts 100 years has a fraction of the environmental footprint of five pieces of furniture that each last 20. We don't use the word sustainable as a marketing claim. We mean it structurally.
Buy once. Buy well. That's the only pitch we're making.
The wood is ready.
The craftsmen are ready.
