There's a lot of furniture sold as "teak" or "solid wood" in India โ teak, sheesham, plantation wood, engineered core with veneer. Most of it isn't what it claims to be. This guide tells you what to look for, what to avoid, and how to make a purchase you won't regret in ten years.

01 โ Nilambur Wild Teak
200+ year lifespanGrown for 50โ100+ years in Kerala's Nilambur valley under Forest Department management. GI certified. Dense (680โ720 kg/mยณ), naturally oily, naturally termite-proof. The wood historical Kerala furniture was made from. Appreciates in value.
What we use. What you want.
02 โ Sheesham (Indian Rosewood)
40โ60 year lifespanDalbergia sissoo, commonly sold as sheesham or rosewood. A genuine hardwood โ actually denser than teak at 770โ850 kg/mยณ. Popular in North Indian furniture markets. However, it contains no tectoquinone oil, so it lacks teak's natural termite immunity, requires annual pest treatment, and can crack in South India's humidity fluctuations. Not GI certified.
Solid wood, but missing the oils that make teak uniquely durable in tropical climates.
03 โ Plantation Teak
50โ70 year lifespanGrown in managed farms and harvested at 25โ40 years. Lower density (580โ620 kg/mยณ), lower oil content, more porous. Sold legally as "teak" because it is the same species. Significantly less durable than wild teak. Requires pest control treatment.
Acceptable, but not what you're paying for if the seller implies wild teak.
04 โ Engineered Wood / MDF / "Teak Finish"
10โ20 year lifespanPlywood, particle board, or MDF core with teak veneer or paint. Often described as "teak look" or "teak finish." Swells in humidity, cannot be repaired after moisture damage, has zero resale value. Common at most price points below โน30,000.
Not solid wood at all. Avoid if you want furniture to last.
In person
The weight test
Lift a chair or pick up a small piece. Wild teak is noticeably heavy โ denser than most people expect. A solid wild teak dining chair typically weighs 6โ9 kg. Plantation teak is lighter. Engineered wood can feel hollow or surprisingly light.
Heavy for its size โ good sign
The touch test
Run your finger along an unfinished edge โ the underside of a tabletop, inside a drawer opening, or a raw joint. Wild teak feels slightly waxy and oily. Plantation teak feels drier. Engineered wood feels rough or powdery at raw edges.
Slightly oily, not dry โ good sign
The grain test
Look at the surface closely. Wild teak has tight, consistent, straight grain with fine lines. The grain looks natural โ no two areas are identical. Veneer or engineered wood has repeated grain patterns (you'll see the same section mirrored or tiled) and the grain doesn't extend through the piece.
Tight, unique, non-repeating grain โ good sign
The colour test
Fresh or recently oiled Nilambur teak is golden honey-brown to rich amber with darker streaks. Plantation teak is paler and more uniform. If a "teak" piece is very uniform in colour and the grain looks printed rather than grown, it is likely veneer.
Rich amber with natural variation โ good sign
The documentation test
Ask for a material origin certificate or a government forest department lot number. Reputable sellers of genuine Nilambur teak will have this. If a seller cannot produce documentation of the timber's origin, treat the wood provenance as unverified.
Origin certificate with KFDC lot number โ verified

What to expect
If a price seems too low for "wild teak", it almost certainly is. Here are realistic price ranges for factory-direct Nilambur wild teak furniture in 2024โ25, before any city showroom markup.
Prices are factory-direct from Nilambur. City showroom prices for equivalent quality are typically 40โ80% higher. Custom dimensions are included at no extra cost.
After you buy
Genuine Nilambur wild teak requires remarkably little maintenance โ this is one of its most underappreciated qualities. The natural oil content does most of the work for you.
Daily care
Dust with a soft dry cloth. For spills, wipe immediately with a dry cloth. Avoid wet cloth on unfinished surfaces โ not because of damage risk, but because it can temporarily raise the grain.
Annual oiling
Apply a thin coat of teak oil or danish oil once a year (or every two years for indoor pieces in low-humidity environments). This restores the golden-brown colour and feeds the wood's natural oils. Use a cloth, not a brush, and wipe off excess after 20 minutes.
What to avoid
Harsh chemical cleaners, silicon-based polishes, and direct prolonged sunlight on finished surfaces. Do not paint or varnish wild teak โ it prevents the wood from breathing and can cause checking over time. The wood is best left to develop its natural patina.
Pest control
You don't need any. The natural tectoquinone oil in wild teak is toxic to termites and wood-boring insects. This immunity holds for the life of the piece โ no annual treatment required. This alone saves most owners โน5,000โ20,000 per year compared to homes with plantation teak furniture.
Questions we hear every week
What is the difference between Nilambur wild teak and plantation teak?
Nilambur wild teak grows for 50โ100+ years in Kerala's managed forests, producing dense (680โ720 kg/mยณ), oil-rich timber with natural termite immunity. Plantation teak is harvested at 25โ40 years โ it is softer, less oily, and significantly less durable. Most commercial teak furniture in India uses plantation teak, often without clearly stating so.
How do I verify furniture is made from genuine Nilambur wild teak?
Ask for a material origin certificate or a government forest department number traceable to the harvest block. Genuine Nilambur teak is noticeably heavy for its size, has a natural oily feel on raw edges, and shows tight, straight grain. Royal Nilambur provides a documented origin certificate with every order.
Is teak furniture worth the investment?
For Nilambur wild teak, yes โ dramatically so. When you calculate cost per year of use over a 100-year lifespan, a Nilambur teak dining table (โน80,000โ1,50,000, bought once) typically costs less per year than a plantation teak or engineered wood alternative that needs replacing every 15โ30 years. Antique Nilambur pieces also appreciate in value โ documented sales show 8โ12% annual appreciation.
What maintenance does Nilambur teak furniture require?
Very little for indoor pieces. The high natural oil content makes it self-protecting against moisture, insects, and fungal growth. Dust regularly and apply teak oil once every one to two years to maintain the golden-brown patina. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners. You do not need pest control treatment โ ever.
Can furniture be customised to my dimensions?
Yes โ all Royal Nilambur furniture is made to order, so dimensions, finish, and joinery details can be adjusted at no extra cost. Common customisations: extending table length, adjusting sofa depth, changing bed height, selecting finish tone. Custom orders take Confirmed after specifications are finalised.
Why do some sellers say "teak" when they mean plantation or rubber wood?
There is no legal requirement in India to specify wood variety on furniture labels. "Teak" can legally refer to any species of tectona grandis regardless of origin, age, or quality. "Teak finish" or "teak look" usually means engineered wood with a veneer or paint. Always ask for origin documentation and request to see the raw wood edge before purchase.
